Why Do Students Struggle with Maths?

Fear of Maths

Math anxiety can stem from past negative experiences with the subject, leading to a lack of confidence and a deep-seated fear that holds students back.

Some students may develop a fear of maths due to a belief that they are not from a maths family or are not a maths person and so are not good at the subject.

Giving Up on Maths

When students encounter repeated difficulties, they may become discouraged. If they consistently experience failure, they can lose interest and motivation.

Continuous struggles without support to teach them essential problem-solving skills; can cause students to give up on math altogether.

Lagging Behind in Maths

Students may fall behind in maths class due to a lack of foundational knowledge, difficulty in keeping up with the pace of a new curriculum, or a change of school.

When foundational gaps are not addressed, students often fall behind their peers, making it challenging to keep up with the curriculum or their peers.

Difficulty in Maths

Students may struggle with maths a lack of understanding of basic concepts, lack of practice, difficulty in problem-solving, or anxiety about the subject.

When the lack of grasp of foundational concepts is not remedied, students consistently experience confusion, frustration and low confidence as topics advance.
